Historic Brick & Repointing Services in South Huron
Old brick has earned its character. The uneven tones, original mortar joints, and details left by craftspeople generations ago are part of what makes a heritage home worth preserving. Repairing that masonry takes more than knowing how to replace a brick.
Historic restoration is one of Wolsey Masonry’s most valued areas of work. We bring specialized knowledge of older materials and construction methods to heritage homes and historic properties throughout South Huron and Southwestern Ontario, with the goal of protecting what makes them distinctive while helping their masonry stand for another generation.
A Century-old Wall Doesn’t Follow Modern Rules
Many older buildings were constructed with lime-based mortar, while modern masonry commonly uses harder Portland cement-based mortars. That distinction matters. Historic brick and softer lime mortar were designed to behave differently from many modern materials. Using an incompatible mortar can affect how moisture moves through the wall and may contribute to damage over time.
Wolsey Masonry considers the age of the structure, original materials, condition of the brick, and existing mortar before determining the restoration approach. Repointing involves carefully removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with an appropriate material to strengthen the masonry and help limit moisture intrusion.

Sometimes the Best Repair Is More than a Patch
A few failing joints may look like a small job, but isolated patches are not always the best answer for older masonry. Transitions between deteriorated material and newer repairs can create vulnerable areas where moisture finds its way in.
When conditions call for it, Wolsey Masonry may recommend restoring a larger section or an entire wall rather than repeatedly patching individual areas. The recommendation is based on what gives the masonry the strongest long-term chance, not simply what makes the problem disappear today.
Damaged bricks can also be carefully removed and replaced, with attention given to matching the existing masonry as closely as possible.

Every Old Wall Has Another Chapter Left
Wolsey Masonry has contributed to restoration work on notable heritage homes, historic residences, older farmhouses, stone foundations, and other historic properties throughout Southwestern Ontario. That experience has included brick replacement, repointing, foundation excavation and repair, and broader masonry restoration.
For owner and operator Brandon, historic work is more than another masonry service. There is a genuine appreciation for stepping into a building’s story, understanding how it was originally built, and preserving as much of that craftsmanship as possible for the people who will care for it next.
